Findings of First-of-a-Kind Study Reveals Apparent Scholarship Discrimination by NCAA
The findings of a first-of-a-kind study of NCAA participation and scholarship data conducted by the College Sports Council (CSC) shows that in NCAA Division I "gender symmetric sports" (teams where both male and female athletes participate), female students are accorded far more opportunities than male students to compete and earn scholarships. CSC Issues National Appeal for "Common-Sense Reform" of Title IX Washington, D.C., June 23, 2008 -- The College Sports Council and the Independent Women's Forum issued a national appeal on the 36th anniversary of the passage of Title IX calling on men and women to work together to effect "straightforward and common-sense" reform to the law's enforcement mechanism in college athletics. Study shows Historically Black Colleges and Universities struggle to meet Title IX's proportionality test. A study by the College Sports Council shows that, due to their student gender ratio approaching 2-1 female to male, nearly all of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are out of compliance with Title IX's proportionality standard.
